Our Garden Murals were sold and the Upper School art students donated the earnings to Thea's Art Closet. We selected Sylvan Hills Elementary School to purchase a kiln for Mrs. Barns art classes. Jason Young- Sylvan Hills Elementary School Principal and Candace Barns- the elementary art teacher attended our chapel to receive the donation. Paul Leopoulos the Founder of the Thea Foundation was thrilled with our students donation. This all came together because of the Garden Mural Project from the Little Rock Garden Club represented by Chucki Bradbury, Becky Scott, and Polly Glotzbach. Wonderful Project.

It was a very successful event at the Clinton
Presidential Great Hall on Sunday, April 12th. Our art student models and
designers did a beautiful job representing our school and showcasing the
incredible things you can do by recycling and up cycling materials into
wearable fashion.
Congratulations to Haylee Greer on
her $400.00 second place prize. Also congratulations to Riley
Blair and Ivy Cox on the amazing work of art they created for the runway
backdrop. Your leadership the past three runway shows will be greatly
missed.
Next years runway show will be even bigger so
if you want to participate you need to talk to Ms. Schultz and start designing
and collecting items to repurpose into wearable fashion.
Thank you to all the student volunteers who
donated time to sell Homes for Haiti. We
raised $80.00 to contribute the Haiti Relief Fund. Excellent Job!

Wishing all of you a very Merry Christmas!
Caroline Martin Batik "War Horse" |
We have had a very productive semester and I will miss seeing many of my art students who will not have art next semester. Many artists submitted to the Scholastic Art and Writing Awards competition this year and we will be waiting on the results. Best of luck to all who have submitted this year.
Santa was hard at work for the Curbside Couture Designers and answered our wishes. A generous donor placed a serger machine, four dress forms, thread, fabric, and a gift card for supplies under the Christmas tree. We are very thankful for the donation and it will be put to great use for this seasons designer workshops.
Artists need to get plenty of rest to get ready for a busy semester of art. We have several art competitions, exhibitions, and the runway show coming up soon.

Watermelon Festival 2014 |
This semester starts with Drawing I, Painting I and II, Printmaking, and AP Art. We have been on a roll from the first day. Art Club has a full agenda that will be presented by Gracie Kreth the Art Club Student Coordinator. The calendar of events will be posted soon. Riley Blair continues as the Homes for Haiti Student Director and has lined up some new exciting events for you to participate in this school year. Come on back soon to see what will all be available.

AP Artists working on the big idea "Golden Ratio" |
Stencil Prints are a popular process this year |
Drawing from observation even in painting class |
Bringing Cezanne style drawing to life |
Drawing I completed a warm up ink drawing based on what they experienced this summer. The images have a interesting interactive viewing window that has cut outs to see into the panoramic drawing scene. All the pieces are on display in the US lobby area.
Cutting the paper viewing window over the line drawing |
Painting I has a wonderful display from the first two weeks next to the US office. The pieces helped to shake off the dust and help us begin to recall our painting abilities. We have already started a new painting based on Janet Fish an American watercolor artist. Our objects have been selected and we are well on our way to another great composition.
Sketching and planning out our composition |
Painting II has a collection of color themed panel paintings on display in the US lobby and has also started a new painting. A old bike is the motif that students sat and observed to create an original composition. We will be exploring a three color harmony to bring this painting to life.
Direct observations of the spaces and shapes create the best works |
Printmaking is a very productive group of artists with so much energy and enthusiam. The class is a large class but we are all working very well together and exploring unique and original ways to create mono prints. A display of our reductive prints and stencil prints are now on display in the US Lobby.
Beautiful example of a stencil monotype |
After we recreated a work of art from some of our summer pieces using a tempera resist method, we are now focused on our interpertation of the Golden Ratio. AP Artists are hard at work with the lesson on a big idea- The Golden Ratio. We have several artist working with unique techniques and materials. This AP art class is off to a very busy start. You will find the tempera resists paintings in the US Lobby hallway.
Composition exploring the use of tea for pigment |
Please wander through the Upper School hallways to see the original works of art on display in person or you can also view the work published on Artsonia. Thank you for supporting the artists.
Here are a few photos of the artists painting faces at the Watermelon Festival and students painting our Watermelon Festival Photo Booth.

Art in the Garden
Interdisciplinary Studies Performance Event
On
November 14th in the evening a small performance and visual art event occurred
in the Quinn Teaching Gardens and Outdoor Classroom. An interested and
excited group of faculty members formed a School Garden Committee three years
ago. We the Garden Committee decided it was time to host an event in the garden
area. So with our talented students, and our talented teachers, with
supportive parents, we did just that. It was a cool evening with a full
moon and a quiet breeze. The magnolia trees lit up with lights and the
garden beds were filled with art and seasonal gourds, and straw bales. We redefined how to showcase the space.
Our poetry readers were prepared and poised to perform under the
moonlight. Lanterns of candle light flickered while harp and violin music
filled the air. Our students from all divisions stepped up to read out
loud to the crowd. It was described as a "magical evening” and a
many felt honored to have participated.
Thank you, thank you! We have a
very special school.
Fashion Entrepreneur Workshop
@Clinton Presidential Library
Our success with the Curbside Couture Fashion Runway show has
inspired a few students to think about college and beyond. When the opportunity
came along to help provide some students more information about making choices
about their futures, I jumped at the chance. Jade Pfiefer, Ivy Cox, and
Celeste Jennings are experienced designers and already create clothing and
accessories. Delia Wade and Riley Blair have found an interest
in entrepreneurial skills through the experience with Homes for
Haiti. We spent an hour at the Clinton Presidential Library and listened
to a panel of speakers about ideas, advice, and opportunities they can consider
if going into the fashion or business world. After the workshop we ate lunch at
the River Market and discussed what we learned. It was a great afternoon.
AP Art and Humanities Memphis Trip
http://www.markcrosby.com/biography.html |
We had a jam packed day that started in Little Rock at 7:30 am and began at the Dixon Art Gallery in Memphis. We viewed the Ashe to Amen art exhibit featuring Black Artists and their religious art forms. Very interesting and we learned a lot of new information. The gardens surrounding the Dixon Gallery were beautiful too. Next we enjoyed the best of Memphis BBQ at Central BBQ. Delicious! Mark Crosby joined us for a luncheon chat about his career path and experience as a lawyer, photographer, film director, and his preservation efforts of William Eggelston's Photography. It was a great visit that taught us that we can find a pathway to balance our creative passions with a career path. You never know where it will lead you.
The Stax Museum was our last stop and it was amazing. This interactive music museum weaves art, music, politics, technology, fashion, design, and history all in one powerful exhibit that is relevant to the world today.

Cornbread Festival 2013
Community
Service work can be fun and make a larger impact on the global community. The Upper School art club project Homes for
Haiti has been busy this year doing just that. We are practicing our sustainability and
recycling skills and helping to Build Haiti Back Better.
Junior Riley
Blair is this year’s student organizer and she has set a goal to keep us
visible in the community and make record fundraising. She is off to an excellent start. This year she has helped keep our social
media updated and informative. Riley has
also kept us busy at three different events this year alone. We started the school year at the Harvestfest
then off to the Catfish Fry, and this weekend we enjoyed selling our Homes for
Haiti pins, ornaments, and magnets at the Cornbread Festival. We are off and running this year with close
to $2,500 and we have several more events to go this year. 100% of the proceeds go directly to the
Clinton Haiti Relief Fund.
If you would
like to be involved in this worthwhile project please contact Joy Schultz-

Homes for Haiti Sale
It’s sometimes hard to imagine how this little project has evolved over the years. We are stronger than ever this year with great student leadership. I have students in middle school – high school who come to support our cause for Haiti. I have excellent students who articulate the project well and with passion. We had over 25 different students for three different sifts sell our Homes for Haiti art pins and ornaments. I had students stand in the road in the middle of the festival and invite festival goers to our booth to hear about our project. Everyone was impressed with the pins and ornaments and our passion for the project. We had people purchase pins and ornaments and some plain straight donations. We turned people on to the needs in Haiti and explained our commitment to Haiti.
This project is much bigger than raising money for the needs in Haiti. It is also about global awareness, leadership, building self esteem, opening the eyes of others to philanthropic works, and the power of art to change the world. As an art educator I strive to bring what they learn in the art studio into the real world. I want my students empowered to create art and change the world for the better. I want them to embrace an idea and do the hard work to achieve greatness. On this beautiful day in Arkansas we raised $1288.25 for the Bill Clinton Haiti Relief Fund.
Paves the Way was a Success
Our Seniors |
We have been busy working on refreshing
our skills and reawakening our creative brains. It is our hope to have
several compositions completed for Back to School Night to showcase our
artistic skills.
Painting Class is working on a large collaborative
composition to help us review color theory and compositional layout.
Drawing Class has already completed a lesson on Line and
mark-making with charcoal, lovely and interesting compositions expressing
value, movement, and line.
Sculpture Class is busy working on a self-portrait in
cardboard. We are recycling and repurposing cardboard while we are
learning how to create a sculpture in the round.
Foundations of Art will be starting on Monday with a lesson
about Line and Salvador Dali- the Father of Surrealism.
AP Art has completed a wonderful Exquisite Corpse
composition to learn how to use different media and to express themselves based
on verbal prompts.

Good Sports Fund
While students are waiting for the end of the school year, a few of my art students are spending their time and talent to help others. The fund was created to honor a man who gave so much to the community. These Home Plates are auctioned off every year to help organizations throughout Arkansas to support educational and necessary opportunities for children in need.
Ms. Schultz was given five Home Plates for students to volunteer to paint for the auction. Here are some of the Home Plates that are completed and on display in the Upper School Library.

We shared our time and talents to help raise awareness for our Homes for Haiti Project and our efforts to help a orphanage in Haiti. BeLikeBrit.org
This orphanage is special to us because we have contributed to its construction. Now - we are helping to provide care to the children living in the orphanage. We are painting a portrait of each child to give to them with a check from the sale of Haitian made photo frames. We will keep you posted on our progress.

Artists can help change the world and we are doing our part. Michelle Compton designed our t-shirt that will be for sale at the Pet Parade. K-12 students are all volunteering and dedicating time to create art work, collect pet food, and use blankets and or towels to help local shelters. We are applying our skills in art to help for the greater good. All proceeds will go to local animal shelters.
